Words Left Untranslated: Redefining My Language
To be honest, I wasn’t interested at the beginning of the lecture. When I saw from the table of contents that today’s topic was Hermann Hesse’s novels and books, I didn’t think it had much to do with me. Shamefully, I only knew the titles of Hesse’s books and had never read even one of them all the way through. So I simply assumed that the lecture would have little to do with me. However, Mentor Min-young Park calmly began to tell us about the path he had taken before getting into the actual analysis of the books. When he finally introduced Narcissus and Goldmund as his favorite work, the lecture that had seemed unrelated to me finally began to speak to me in my own language.
He told us the story of how he decided to leave school in his second year of high school. He entered a cram school to prepare for the college entrance exam and asked his parents to invest in him, promising to prove himself through his results. He eventually got accepted into Yonsei University. The moment I heard that part, it felt as though I was listening to my own story. I, too, had completely distanced myself from academics until my second year of high school. Only when I became a senior did I suddenly begin preparing for art college entrance exams. Then, in the year I turned eighteen, I entered a residential cram school and devoted myself to studying the liberal arts for a year. I still clearly remember that the loneliness of knowing that no one else was walking the same path as me, and the anxiety over whether this reckless choice was truly the right one, were far more overwhelming than the studying itself ever was.
In the latter half of the lecture, what he said while introducing Narcissus and Goldmund stayed with me the longest. He said that he had originally wanted to draw and attend an arts high school, but his circumstances did not allow him to tell his parents about that dream. So, although he wanted to become Goldmund, who experiences the world through sensitivity and intuition, he ultimately chose the life of Narcissus, who seeks essence through reason and logic. I, too, was once someone who drew and prepared for art college entrance exams. That one year, when I put aside the path I had originally wanted to take and turned toward studying the liberal arts, might have been the time when I set aside the Goldmund within me and began to learn the language of Narcissus.
He referred to that time as a “path different from others.” While all the friends around me were beginning their college lives at the age of eighteen, I had to sit alone in a residential cram school classroom and become a student preparing for the college entrance exam all over again. And the question he habitually asked himself, “Am I worse today than I was yesterday?”, was no different from the question I asked myself while enduring that one year. Not measuring myself against others, but measuring who I am today against who I was yesterday. With that one belief, I walked from the point where I felt I had hit rock bottom all the way to Dongguk University.
Shamefully, I wasn’t able to fully grasp Hesse’s writing. However, what I encountered that day was not the sentences in a book, but a person’s life as an original text—a life in which he had made a choice between the two diverging paths of Narcissus and Goldmund and taken responsibility for that choice. As an aspiring interpretation and translation major, translating to me is not simply changing words based on a dictionary. It is bringing another person’s unfamiliar choice into a language that I can understand. I translated and read the dream of becoming like Goldmund that he had once set aside through the language of my own year of preparing for the college entrance exam again. Through that translation, I was finally able to understand that life.
As I continue to major in interpretation and translation, I will undoubtedly encounter countless unfamiliar sentences. However, through this lecture, I learned once again that what is most needed before translating those sentences is the attitude of trusting the me of today a little more than the me of yesterday. The story of a person who rewrote the dream he had once put aside on a path untraveled by others, using the language of Narcissus, will likely remain with me for a very long time. Perhaps it will remain with the person I will become in the future as well.
