The Miracle of Mentor Han Min-gwan, Forged by ‘Geuraeng-i-jil’

The deep emotion and resonance I felt while attending Mentor Han Min-gwan’s special invited lecture, “Challenge and Tenacity Toward a Dream,” lingered for a long time even after the lecture ended. From a comedian who moved to Seoul without plan and delivered laughter to the public on stage, to a racer who risked his life on the track, and to a successful businessman who built his own brand, CEO Han Min-gwan’s lecture was incredibly engaging from beginning to end. His career, which began empty-handed in a small rural village and continued to stand tall amid life’s uncertainties and unpredictable situations, made it feel as if the words “challenge” and “tenacity” had taken human form. Although he did not have grand goals from the very beginning, his story of running at full speed without stopping even once from the moment he planted the seed of a dream in his heart made me deeply reflect on myself and question what a true attitude and passion toward life really are.

The part of the lecture that left the strongest impression on me was his vivid account of his early days in business, when he personally carried a laptop and ran around looking for sponsors. Even in the face of harsh rejections and cold responses as he knocked on the doors of countless companies, he never gave up or lost his self-confidence. Instead, his flexible but strong attitude, as he turned away with a bright and confident smile, saying, “I’ll come back next year. Please keep an eye on me until then,” deeply impressed me.

During the following Q&A session, I asked him about the secret to maintaining his mindset without getting hurt even in moments of continuous rejection and failure. In response, Mentor Han Min-gwan gave me a sincere answer, “In the end, everything is a matter of mindset. I think of people who are in much more difficult and challenging situations than I am, compose myself, and gratefully accept the situation I have been given.” This way of managing his mindset by broadening his perspective and lifting himself back up, rather than dwelling on the hardships that had befallen him and blaming himself, was a valuable lesson that clearly showed me what the essence of resilience is.

In addition, his appearance of living his best in every moment by continuously building positive relationships with the people around him, humbly seeking advice from senior figures in his field, and becoming a protective fence for his beloved family gave me a deeply human impression beyond a simple success story. In particular, his driving force of putting others first and proving his sincerity, saying, “It does not cost a single penny to praise and cheer for others,” clearly explained why he could not help but receive sincere help and love from the people around him even amid the numerous crises in his life.

Just as ‘Geuraeng-i-jil’, which is a traditional architectural technique of precisely carving the bottom of a wooden pillar to fit the irregular shape of a natural stone base, Mentor Han Min-gwan was a person who built a solid foundation by carving and refining himself rather than blaming others, even amid the uneven terrain of life and waves of rejection. By learning from his diligence in fiercely moving his body without settling for reality in order to increase his income, his strong sense of responsibility to protect the people he loves, and his warm interest in and praise for others, I also found a clear milestone for what kind of attitude and determination I should fill my future with. No matter what obstacles or cold rejections may be waiting ahead of me, I will prove my worth with an unwavering spirit and a positive mindset.

I sincerely express my deepest gratitude to CEO Han Min-gwan for taking his precious time to share his honest advice and wisdom about life.
