How to Enjoy What You Do in Skilled Chaos

When we think of the words "tradition" or "Korean traditional music," rigid rules tend to come to mind. Art confined to perfectly synchronized choreography and strict rhythm is undeniably beautiful, but it can sometimes feel like yet another source of stress for busy modern people. This week's "A Journey to Find My True Self" class featured a nanta performance by theater company Cheongmyeong (director: Kim Minseok). I came in not so much excited as exhausted from daily life. All I had heard beforehand was that it was "a fusion Korean traditional percussion performance bringing together professional drummers and young artists," and I sat in a soft chair staring at the drums and buk on stage, half-expecting something like a nanta show I had vaguely seen from a distance once. But what I encountered was not a perfectly choreographed production — it was a raw, enormous energy that pounded straight at the heart.

When the performance began, the resonance of the traditional buk drum traveled through the floor of the auditorium and into me. But that very resonance, with its gentle rhythmic lull, only made me sleepier. A college student in exam season spends their days surrounded by assignments and study; having slept only four hours, the post-lunch timeslot was genuinely hard to stay awake through. But as if sensing that many of us were fighting drowsiness, Cheongmyeong called out: "Sleepy? Tired?" — and won us over with that simple acknowledgment. They drew clapping from the audience and coaxed sounds like eolssu from our lips. The stage did not stop at drumming. Sharp rhythms from the kkwaenggwari and small drum carried spinning sangmo hat-ribbons overhead, while fans and long-sleeved hanbok cut through the air and gave us something vivid to watch. The hanbok hems flaring with the performers' fierce movements, strands of sweat-soaked hair arcing through the air — it was all raw, unprocessed art in itself.

The moment that left the deepest impression was the exchange with the audience, and the eruption of what I can only call Cheongmyeong's signature skilled chaos. The company kept pushing the initially stiff audience — urging cheers, prompting shouts, pulling out applause — and it all felt natural and completely assured. Even when the crowd seemed unmoved, the performers poured out energy without tiring, and eventually the hall began to boil over together with the stage.

The "chaos" I felt in those moments was nothing like disorder in a negative sense. It felt more like freedom — a departure from the expected decorum of a performance. So what if it wasn't perfectly synchronized? So what if hair flew loose and costume hems tangled? What came through the entire body was that the artists on stage were not performing calculated moves — they were genuinely, madly enjoying this moment. I, too, stopped watching others' reactions and joined this chaotic but liberated festival.

One remark made during the performance left a particular impression: director Kim Minseok's comment that "two days get lost to broadcast preparation." He put it bluntly — that two full days of rehearsal and stage preparation are sacrificed for a broadcast appearance that shows the public only a brief glimpse. In that, I saw the artistic pride and sincerity that defines Cheongmyeong. What mattered to them was not the polished image projected through media, but the process itself — sweating every day at the drum, meeting the audience raw and unfiltered on stage.

Cheongmyeong's performance threw a heavy question at me: What is the one devotion of your life? It was the first thing director Kim said before the show began. For a long time, I had trapped myself in the world's standards and in perfectionism, growing anxious the moment any plan went slightly off course. But the young artists of Cheongmyeong, beating the drums with their whole bodies and their hair flying free, were saying something with every inch of themselves: even if life is sometimes chaotic, it is enough if you can throw yourself into it completely and enjoy it.

This performance has made me want to redesign my path forward. First, I will pursue the sincerity of enjoying the process over the result. Like Cheongmyeong's reluctance to lose rehearsal time, I want to love the steady, unglamorous hours of building real inner capability rather than rushing to accumulate credentials for others to see. Second, I will cultivate the flexibility to stop fearing chaos. When life does not go according to plan, I do not want to despair — I want the resilience to find new joy and vitality within that disorder. On whatever stage life brings me next, I want to shout without hesitation, clap with everything I have, and keep walking toward my own singular devotion.
